A professor of mine (adolescent psychology no less) recently commented that “no teenagers act like they do on Secret Life of the American Teenager…” and “The so-called teens on that are more like adults in the way they think and behave with one another.”

This makes sense, seeing as it’s obviously marketed towards parents (who are adults). It is just another example of what’s been called “adult-centric” thinking, similar to when one race assumes another race thinks similar to the way they do.

Wow is right. Unbelievable. Young people as products for adults to deliver – and of course to put in detention when they don’t do as expected. Have you heard about any other public outcry about this? I wonder if Susan Ohanian would be up for adding this to her huge list of Outrages. I’ll forward this to her. How else can we get the word out about such awful depictions of young people?

This is truly classic. They’ve been coming up with claims about how youth are “alarmingly” out of control for decades. According to Mike Males’…this attention to our “corrupt” youth is just a diversion from the fact that the number of children living in poverty in the US has risen over the years between 1975 and 1995. That, and the fact that it’s nothing more than a scapegoat.

Epstein is one of those big time voices for youth empowerment and rights. I’ve often wondered how the Test of Adultness is scored. Most likely the questions are scored based on a level of dimensional factors. Those 140 questions are probably dived up between questions children ought to be able to answer, questions children “ought’ to have difficulty with, and questions adults “ought” to be able to answer. It’s probably standardized somehow along those lines.
