The 4th of November, 8:56 P.M.: At the moment news is blaring upstairs about who will be the next president. I’ve no idea who’s in the lead (as I have yet to go upstairs), but I think Barack Obama should win. But why am I blathering on about the presidential election when my blog is about entirely different issues? Why would I choose this strange observation–of all things–to start out something potentially great?
Youth. This election seems to have been all about youth making their mark, and with Barack being so young for a president, it’s an amazing thing. And you know what else is amazing? Knowing that you have the power to change the world in a very amazing way, and all you have to do is try. So does he, and look how far trying has got him! And youth–they do, too! I am young myself, and (as I’ve already stated) I believe I can contribute to changing the world.
Speaking of belief, let’s talk about another one of mine: I believe that this election symbolizes the battle between agism and youth going on, not just in your home country (or mine), but in the majority of the world. Barack: young, resilient, and perfectly prepared to take charge. But what do McCain and the conservatives think of him? Reckless, inexperienced, and overly-ambitious! The same for what society thinks of its young people: so unprepared that we must protect them (or stop them) from making any sort of contribution. Little does society know, however, that it is its protections for youth {entitlements, compulsive education, agist legislation} that hurt us the most!
And do you know what else I believe? I believe it’s time for change.
